Policy Oversight Group
Self-advocacy can be defined as the ability to speak up on behalf of
one’s own life. It’s about being able to decide what’s best for oneself. As
an advocate for yourself, you are able to ask for what you need and
want, and develop a plan to achieve your goals.
Self-advocacy has three key elements:
- Understanding your needs
- Knowing what kind of support might help
- Communicating these needs to others
Benefits of self-advocacy:
Greater control: You become an active participant in shaping your environment and experiences.
Empowering others: Your self-advocacy journey can inspire others with disabilities to take charge of their lives.
Increased independence: By speaking up and securing the support you need, you gain control over your life and become less reliant on others.
Improved self-esteem: Successfully advocating for yourself builds confidence and empowers you to believe in your abilities.
The ISN Policy Oversight Group is made up of self-advocates who help coordinate and guide the program in eight counties, assuring that it is administered according to individuals’ needs and that policies and procedures are developed to create the highest quality services.
