Extreme Heat: Helpful Tips and Cooling Center Resources

With the current extreme heat affecting many of the counties we serve, it’s important to stay safe, stay cool, and know where to go for relief if needed. High temperatures can be especially dangerous for people with disabilities, so we want to share some helpful reminders and resources with you and your loved ones.

Here are a few ways to stay safe in the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (usually between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.).
  • Use fans or air conditioning if available or take cool showers or baths.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Check in with friends, neighbors, or caregivers regularly.

If you or someone you support needs a place to cool down, cooling centers are open throughout many communities. Please remember to call ahead to any shelter or center to make sure they’re open and able to help before you go.

You can also:

  • Dial 211 or visit 211info.org to find up-to-date information about local cooling centers and other resources.
  • Contact your Personal Agent for additional help, guidance, or support.

If you don’t have an air conditioner and need somewhere to go to stay cool, we’ve listed cooling centers available in the six counties we serve that are experiencing the extreme heat wave today.
